New proposals for ventilation rates in machine rooms.

Number: pap. n. 17

Author(s) : PACHAI A. C., HANSEN T. P.

Summary

For several years, the charge on the refrigeration system has been the nominator for the ventilation rate of a machine room, regardless of the refrigerant type. Accepting that future refrigerants are also flammable to some extent, we need new standards to determine the ventilation rates. The new standards must take into account the type of refrigerant and the detection systems available. This paper explains and compares a proposed calculation method, which reflects the new way of estimating potential hazards while complying with the rules following the so-called Seveso II+III directives, which deal with the prevention and control of major accident hazards involving dangerous substances. Here, the charge is not the main concern but more so how the industry ensures safety around the systems containing refrigerants. A proposal forwarded to CEN and ISO will be explained and compared to other ways of dimensioning the ventilation system including the existing system. The idea is also to reduce the energy consumed for ventilation when ventilation is not required.
