Summary

The nexus between energy consumption and Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in commercial air-conditioned buildings has not been studied in the Indian context despite the associated energy, occupant health, and potential financial impacts. This study is an exploration of the nexus between the energy consumption and indoor air quality in commercial buildings. A model for predicting air-conditioning energy consumption for variation in occupancy, and based on the time of the day, day of the week, and building envelope loads is proposed with a view of opening up opportunities for potential energy savings without compromising IAQ. The existing Demand Controlled Ventilation (DCV) models are based on measurement of CO2, or occupancy sensors and online modulation of ambient air which allows for the reduction in the energy consumption. DCV model is reactive and the proposed model is predictive. Additional factors for special occasions causing high or low occupancies to predict the energy consumption are proposed. Based on the actual energy consumption, the model can be calibrated. Unlike the DCV model which is applicable to all spaces, the proposed model would be applicable to a specific building and would have to be suitably modified for other buildings. A reduction in the energy consumption of air-conditioning systems without reduction in IAQ is observed in the study cases.
