Nucleate pool boiling heat transfer of 2-ethyl-1-hexanol added LiBr solution on a nano-porous surface.

Summary
The use of heat transfer additives such as 2-ethyl-1-hexanol is popular in LiBr chillers. Although the effectiveness of additives in the absorber has been a distinct subject of numerous studies, their impact on boiling heat transfer was simply ignored until now In this study, the authors report preliminary results on boiling heat transfer of LiBr solution containing a small amount of 2-ethyl-1-hexanol on a nano-porous surface. The nano-porous surface was used as the boiling surface since such a surface can increase vapor/gas entrapment and active nucleation site density. In addition, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol can reduce the interfacial tension, decreasing the pressure required within the vapour bubble. However, the LiBr solution with low surface tension can also promote the flooding of cavities. Thus, the nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficient can be deterred due to decreasing the active nucleation site density. In order to investigate this complex relationship between nucleate boiling performance and additives, a nanoporous structure was created on an aluminum alloy test section using a cost-effective anodizing technique. Based on the experimental data, the trend of nucleate boiling heat transfer corresponding to the additive concentrations is reported and discussed.
