Numerical analysis of a new heat integrated structure for vapor purification of an ammonia water-absorption refrigeration system.

Summary
The requirement of vapor purification is a main drawback on the system bulk and performance of an ammonia water absorption refrigeration system. This paper presents a new vapor purification structure with excellent internal heat recovery capacity for refrigeration applications to instead a traditional distillation column. The new structure is mainly composed of a strong solution cooled rectifier and a weak solution heated generator. In order to get a thorough understanding on the heat and mass transfer mechanism in this structure as well as its effective design, a numerical analysis based on a counter-flow model considering both heat and mass transfer resistances is carried out. The temperature and mass fraction profiles along the length of the structure are obtained and characteristic analyses are performed. The heat transfer resistance is mainly in the vapor phase while the mass transfer resistance in the liquid phase. The numerical results also show that the COP of a system with the new structure is 26.1% higher than that of a traditional system.
