Numerical prediction of heat transfer inside the cylinder of a reciprocating compressor.

Summary

A numerical model is used to investigate in-cylinder heat transfer in a small reciprocating compressor, including flow through suction and discharge valves. A finite volume methodology is used to numerically solve the turbulent flow inside the cylinder, whereas valve dynamics is described with a one-degree of freedom model. Numerical results for instantaneous heat transfer at the walls are obtained for actual compressor operating conditions and compared with correlations proposed in the literature. It is found that the flow field in the cylinder, associated with the opening of valves, has a strong impact on the heat transfer phenomenon.
