Observation of flow behaviour of refrigerant and PAG oil in a CO2 heat pump system.

Author(s) : GAO L., HONDA T.

Summary

In order to clarify the mechanism of the influence of the lubricating oil on the heat exchangers of CO2 heat pump system, sight glasses were installed in the experimental loop, and the flow behaviour of the refrigerant and the lubricating oil (PAG) was observed. The sight glasses were set at the outlets of the gas cooler, the expansion valve and the evaporator. The film and droplets of the lubricating oil were observed at the outlet of the gas cooler. At the outlet of the expansion valve, the CO2 liquid was cloudy. At the outlet of the evaporator, the film of the oil was observed. Oil droplets were observed in the CO2 liquid phase, and on the interface of CO2 liquid and the oil. The solubility of the lubricating oil in CO2 liquid phase was measured, and the values are very small. The quantity of oil in the oil film was also measured. The quantity increases with the increase in the vapour quality. The influence of lubricating oil on the heat transfer coefficient of the evaporator was also investigated.
