Summary

An approximate formula is proposed for the more general case in which the matrix resistivity and the thermal conductivity obey the Wiedemann-Franz law and the specific heat depends arbitrarily on the temperature. With this formula, the connection between the normal zone voltage and the hot spot temperature can be worked out. In an example studied in detail (silver-BSCCO conductor at 20 K), the voltage appears adequate to allow detection of the normal zone before the conductor overheats.
