Summary

A mixed-refrigerant Joule-Thomson refrigerator (MJTR) for use in cascade refrigeration temperature range is reported in this paper. The optimization model for this refrigerator is established including the principle of component selection and operating parameter optimization. The theoretical comparison between a cascade refrigerator and a MJTR is also made. The result shows that the efficiency of mixed refrigerant J-T refrigerator is close to that of the classical cascade refrigeration system. A mixed-refrigerant Joule-Thomson refrigerator was made and tested. A cooling capacity of 11 W at -120 °C with a three-component mixture and a cooling capacity of 20 W at -70 °C were achieved. Considering its simplicity and reliability, the single throttling refrigeration system can take the place of the classical cascade refrigeration system in many cases.
