Summary

THE RESULTS OF A STUDY CARRIED OUT IN 1986/87 AND THEN IN 1987/88, ON COLD STORAGE OF ABOUT 600 TONS OF APPLES (GOLDEN DELICIOUS AND GLOSTER) ARE GIVEN. IN 1987/88, THE FRUIT PUT INTO STORE AT THE END OF OCTOBER WAS TAKEN OUT BETWEEN MARCH 7 AND APRIL 15, 1988. THE ENERGY REQUIREMENT FOR COOLING, STORAGE AND REMOVAL OF FRUIT WAS 7.13 KILOWATTHOURS, THAT IS 6.30 ATS PER 100 KGOF APPLES. THE AMORTIZATION OF BUILDINGS, PLANT AND CONTAINERS INCREASED THIS FIGURE TO 97.5 ATS PER 100 KG OF APPLES. THESE FIGURES DO NOT INCLUDE STAFF OR FRUIT DISTRIBUTION COSTS, BUT COSTS FOR 1986/87 WERE EVEN HIGHER. THE ARTICLE ALSO CONSIDERS THE STORAGE TIME AND THE DEGREE OF OPTIMIZATION ACHIEVED.
