Summary
Depending on the specific requirement, the new system can optimize cooling or heating COP as well as cooling or heating capacity. The investigation includes a review of previous work, theoretical derivations of the optimizing criteria and experimental work in a test chamber. Experiments show the feasibility of greatly reducing the number of defrosts. The paper presents a method of inferring heat pump performance from measurements of refrigerant temperature and pressure. An integrated refrigeration management system can optimize the total operation of a heat pump, including defrosting.
