Summary

Uses the example of silencers for air conditioning systems to show that both stress caused by noise and the costs of reducing noise are considerably underestimated. Argues that consulting engineers should estimate much more rigorously the monetary implications of the noise-reduction requirements as well as of the noise reduction measures recommended. Notes that in some extreme cases certain silencers are completely unsuitable because, on a global basis, they cause the environment more harm than good. Illustrates the factors of noise stress, costs, silencer design and energy losses caused by silencers. Describes a case study of silencers for a power station. Discusses the economical design of splitter dampers.
