Ozone: apocalypse or disinformation?

Ozone apocalypse ou désinformation ?

Summary

Article based on a bibliography. Previous pessimistic predictions that did not come to pass are mentioned, including those made during the energy crisis in 1973, the Gulf war in 1991 (with the cost of petroleum rising to 100 USD per barrel), the recovery of oil wells in Koweit, etc. To avoid further errors, the ozone issue must be addressed carefully, since measurements made since 1879 are available, and they show a "natural" variability of the ozone content in the atmosphere, particularly as a function of volcanic eruptions. By comparing two series of measurements made in the Northern hemisphere, between 1935 and 1969 on one hand, and between 1985 and 1989 on the other (monthly means on each series of years), it is shown that there had not been a notable decrease. However, further studies are required on the Antarctic, and uncalled for gloom-mongering must be avoided. Y.G.
