Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) investigation of air-curtain entrainment in open display cases.

Author(s) : FIELD B., KALLURI R., LOTH E.

Summary

Air curtains are used in refrigerated display cases to contain the inside air and keep out ambient air. Entrainment of ambient air results in reduced efficiency. This study used cinematic particle image velocimetry (PIV) to visualize the refrigerated air curtain and investigate the flow dynamics. Momentum and thermal entrainment parameters were defined to characterize the amount of entrainment. The variation of energy loading due to entrainment as a function of Reynolds number was obtained.
