Summary

Typically, when characterizing a variable speed compressor for air conditioning, the performance of the variable speed drive (inverter) is not analyzed: the compressor-inverter system is studied as a whole.
Consequently, discrepancies rise with regard to power consumption and efficiency of the overall system when the compressor is delivered without inverter and other inverter brand is installed. This fact affects to appliance designers directly as a compressor can underperform in the final appliance when installed with a different inverter.
In this study a model of the performance of an inverter is presented. The model uses as input the consumption of the system and the speed of the compressor and only 4 fitting coefficients are used. The model has been fitted with a dataset of more than 130 tests which covers all the working conditions of the variable speed compressors and provides typical deviations lower than 5%.
