Summary

The ATLAS and CMS experiments connected for the first time their ultra-low temperature R744 chiller concept to a remote evaporator installed in the ATLAS services’ cavern. With around 300 m long connection between the chiller installed on surface and the evaporator installed 85 m underground, it is of main importance to assess the system’s oil management and transient responsiveness, before launching the production of the final refrigeration units.
The experimental data collected reports the overall steady and transient cooling performance and the limits of operation imposed by the layout and system’s design. The results highlight the favourable properties of R744 for distant remote cooling applications at ultra-low temperatures.
