Summary
To reduce global warming, an important challenge is to develop efficient cold climate heat pumps (ccHP) with low GWP refrigerants, preferably natural refrigerants. However, natural refrigerants present their own unique challenges, including charge restrictions for flammable or toxic refrigerants or high operating pressures for trans-critical CO2. This paper presents a novel R290 ccHP that provides space heating, space cooling, and water heating while being efficient, cost-effective, and flexible. To account for charge restrictions, the refrigerant is contained in a factory-charged outdoor unit, connected to end-use modules (thermal storage, hot water, and indoor coil) through secondary glycol loops. Additionally, this system includes a valve-pump assembly and multiple segment heat exchanger (MSHX), combining a desuperheater, condenser and sub-cooler sections that allow the system to operate in several modes, depending on the comfort needs and ambient conditions. The system performance is evaluated for different operating modes and refrigerant charge.
