Summary

Chilled water supplied from a chiller plant to air-side terminal devices has been increased in the water temperature to achieve a high chiller performance in many operational practices. Operator can always find a huge energy saving from reading the power input to a chiller while with little understanding that the space thermal comfort might have been compromised. This paper describes the design of several new circuit layouts of fan coil units (FCUs) which demonstrate improved cooling and moisture removal capabilities. However, under the constraints of fixed cooling coil geometry and tube surface of traditional FCUs, it is not recommended to increase the chilled water supply temperature even though a better configuration of circuit layout can be realized.
