Performance improvement of plate fin-and-tube heat exchangers under frosting conditions.

Summary

A series of tests were conducted to observe frost formation and investigate the performance of heat exchangers. The observation indicated that frost should partly decrease at the leading edge of fins to reduce air pressure drop. Therefore, front staging (wide fin spacing at the entrance of airflow) and side staging (wide fin spacing in the airflow direction by arranging fins of different sizes or by cutting part of the fins) were provided in the heat exchangers for refrigerators, and partial cutting of fins was provided at the leading edge of the heat exchangers' fins for air conditioners.
