Summary

For reducing greenhouse gas the fuel cell propulsion system using hydrogen energy is expected to be applied to ships. The use of liquid hydrogen offers promising prospects for small coastal boats with stable navigation and a long cruising range. In this research, we prototyped a liquid hydrogen vaporizer that vaporizes liquid hydrogen to ambient temperature using seawater as a heat medium, tailored for the fuel supply system for use in small coastal boats. The vaporizer is designed to support a 60kW fuel cell and a seawater inlet temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. The hydrogen gas temperature at the outlet and the pressure loss were measured. The heat transfer performance was calculated. In addition, the chill down time, the time needed for the test condition to stabilize after supplying liquid hydrogen was measured. The result showed that all the requirements were met and that there was no freezing of the heat medium water.
