Hydrogen permeabilty testing of fibre reinforced thermoplastics under cryogenic conditions – a test rig concept.

Summary
A major downside of using liquid hydrogen as a fuel in future mobility is the gross weight of the cryogenic storage system and piping. Especially in aviation, there is a need to significantly decrease the overall mass of the hydrogen fuel system. Therefore, the development of (liquid) hydrogen compatible lightweight fibre reinforced thermoplastic composite materials (FRT) is pursued. In contrast to established stainless steel solutions however, hydrogen permeation through FRT is not negligible. Hence, newly developed FRT for application in (liquid) hydrogen pipe and tank structures need to be qualified in terms of their hydrogen permeability. In this paper, we propose a laboratory test rig for hydrogen permeability testing of FRT under cryogenic conditions in order to qualify those materials for future use in aviation.
