Summary

The RUBHY (Responsible Unmanned Bird with HYdrogen) project was created with the joint goals of reducing the carbon footprint of aviation and orientating the industry toward more sustainable fuels. This in-house research project aims to design and develop a prototype liquid hydrogen (LH2) and fuel cell electrical propulsion system for lightweight unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). This paper presents the first phase of this research project, which consists of the design and experimental characterization of the cryogenic fuel system. Firstly, a robust numerical tool is proposed to model the operation of the cryogenic tank in various in-flight stages, followed by the presentation of the envisaged complex numerical model, accommodating both heat transfer and tank mechanics. Finally, a two-step experimental measurement campaign will be conducted to validate the model. The ultimate goal is a mission-driven design tool to deliver LH2 fuelled electrical propulsion system for lightweight UAVs.
