Summary

As total carbon emissions become the focus of commercial refrigeration system design, both refrigerant selection and system architectures are being challenged. While non-traditional design schemes are needed to match performance of existing systems when employing low GWP industrial chemicals like CO2, innovative solutions are being developed around HFO refrigerants. This paper will discuss the application of an R- 513A booster system architecture for the simultaneous use in low and medium temperature commercial refrigeration. Thermodynamic modelling will be used to quantify energy performance in comparison to traditional HFC systems. Considerations will also be given for future conversions to pure R-1234yf in the same architecture.
