Summary
Global warming issues have led international stakeholders to tighten regulations on conventional refrigerant utilization and switch to refrigerants having low global warming potential (GWP). However, in actual applications, the conversion to low-GWP refrigerants should be determined not only by its environmental impact but also by the device performance, such as in refrigerated display cabinets (RDCs), which account for a very high percentage of total energy consumption and have a longer operating time than other cooling devices. This study focused on the refrigeration-cycle simulation of an RDC using a low-GWP refrigerant, R-1234yf (HFO-1234yf), and evaluated the annual performance of the device by considering the actual geometry of the equipment and the relationship between the temperature and heat load inside and around the RDC. The applicability of R-1234yf as a low-GWP refrigerant in the RDC was also analyzed quantitatively.
