Summary

This is an experimental work to drop in refrigerant R 134a to replace the Butane in a domestic refrigerator of 160 W rated power. Previous works experiments results showed that the pressure rises showing double values compared to that of Butane, the design pressure of the refrigerator. The increase in exit pressure produced an increase in exit temperature. An increase in power consumption followed, which lead to a condition of over heat. Shut down was experience in less than one hour working time. The experiment was repeated several times with different mass charges of the R-134a and no matter of the mass charge, same behavior of over heat was encountered, but shut down occurred at different time. Several works in the literature showed that drop in of Butane to replace R-134a for replacement, gave a successful operation, performance was acceptable with decrease in power consumption for the same capacity. Butane performance was monitored, with the experiment time and reasonable results were obtained.
