Phase transformation behaviour of austenitic stainless steels upon deformation at cryogenic temperatures.

Author(s) : NYILAS A., SHIBATA K., OGATA T.

Summary

Thermal expansion investigations between 10 and 290 K have been carried out with tensile specimens of austenitic stainless steel materials of series 300. A slight straining of these specimens between 0.1 and 0.5% strain at 10 K revealed a well detectable shape memory effect starting around 200 K. After re-heating the tensile specimen to 300 K the determined length was less than the original virgin state. These dilatometric responses were investigated and data have been represented to enlighten the property changes accompanied the low temperature straining shortly after the micro elastic limit.
