Low yield stress of 304 series steels at cryogenic temperatures.
Author(s) : SHIBATA K., OGATA T., NYILAS A., et al.
Summary
Yield stresses of 304 series steels at cryogenic temperatures are remarkably low comparing to those of other more stable steels as 316L and the reason is examined using computer simulation. Considering effects of strain, heat and strengthening by martensitic transformation on the stress-strain curve, it was shown that the low yield stress of 304L steel is revealed by martensitic transformation induced by elastic stress. But no martensite was detected by X-ray diffractometry at the ambient temperature in the 304L specimen deformed at 4 K by a very small plastic strain. Therefore, the probability of reversion of the martensite during heating to the ambient temperature was discussed.
