Measurement of cryogenic fracture toughness of aluminium alloys.

Author(s) : PAN Q. Y., ZHENG B., ZHAO L. Z., et al.

Summary

Fracture toughness is an important property for engineering materials and measurement of the room temperature fracture toughness of engineering materials has been well established. Aluminium alloys have been used as structure materials in cryogenic engineering application. However, few works has been reported for measurement of the fracture toughness of aluminium alloys at cryogenic temperature. In this work, the measurement of the fracture toughness of aluminium alloys at 77 and 4.2 K has been reported using the authors' cryogenic mechanics measuring system. Load-displacement curve was first experimentally obtained and fracture toughness at low temperature was then determined.
