Piloting laboratory testing on Walk in Cold Rooms.

Summary

Numerous manufacturers supply walk in cold rooms (WICRs) for horticultural and agricultural produce across the Global South. Verifying and comparing the performance specifications of these WICRs is often difficult. Therefore CLASP (VeraSol) has taken the initiative to specify performance standards and test methods. As part of this effort, VeraSol and Wageningen University & Research collaborated to pilot laboratory testing on a WICR using the VeraSol test methods. The tests were performed in the ATP test facility of Wageningen University & Research, which is a state-of-the-art laboratory accredited under ISO/IEC 17025 and recognized by UNECE for ATP qualification testing. The results indicate that a WICR’s thermal performance can largely be assessed by performing an empty pull-down test and a (simplified) K-value test. Including a steady-state effectiveness test adds information on adequacy of thermostat control, and energy efficiency in this common operating condition.
