Plant design considerations for cascade systems using CO2.

Author(s) : ROLFSMAN L.

Summary

The paper discusses different aspects of a CO2 system. The focus is on the low temperature stage in a cascade system. Some comparisons are made with a normal 2-stage operation and secondary circulation with CO2. The reasons to go for a CO2 system instead of a standard 2-stage ammonia system are for industrial refrigeration, the local environment and economics, the global perspective is taken when a synthetic refrigerant is changed to a natural one. In many cases it is not possible to use hydrocarbons or ammonia outside the machine room.
