POTASSIUM-DOPED C60 DEMONSTRATES SUPERCONDUCTIVITY.

Summary
THE SYNTHESIS OF MACROSCOPIC AMOUNTS OF C60 AND C70 (FULLERENES) HAS STIMULATED A VARIETY OF STUDIES ON THEIR PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES. A GROUP OF SCIENTISTS HAS DEMONSTRATED THAT C60 AND C70 BECOME CONDUCTIVE WHEN DOPED WITH ALKALI METALS. THE SAME GROUP HAS NOW REPORTED THAT COOLING THE DOPED MATERIAL TO 18 K MAKES IT SUPERCONDUCTING. THE TEAM ALSO FOUND THAT POTASSIUM GIVES HIGHER ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY THAN OTHER ALKALI METALS. THE BEST RESULTS ARE OBTAINED WHEN THERE ARE ABOUT 3 POTASSIUM ATOMS PER C60 MOLECULE.
