Precautions and procedures for hydrocarbon chiller plant rooms.

Author(s) : TADROS A., CLARK J. W., LEONARDI E., et al.

Summary

This paper deals with safety precautions and emergency procedures for refrigeration and air-conditioning plant rooms, which can make injury or damage from hydrocarbon leaking, mixing with air and igniting impossible. A fire and vapour-proof wall should separate the chiller from all other plant-room components. This compartment should be vented to atmosphere through floor-to-ceiling louvers with projected area typically greater than 62% of the area of a side wall. If the minimum design ambient temperature is less than 5 K above the refrigerant boiling point, the compartment floor should form a basin to hold twice the refrigerant liquid volume.
