Summary

Despite the fact that compactness and cost are known to be the two main drawbacks for the development of small cooling power sorption systems, few compacts evaporators are used in these systems. Indeed, evaporators currently used are mainly flooded evaporators of falling film evaporators. Since these technologies have often tubular design and may require a recirculating pump, they have limitations in the reduction of size and cost for small sorption chillers. It is thus believed, for small cooling power, that a plate-type design would allow a more compact and cost-effective chiller since the typical area of a compact plate-type heat-exchanger is in the order of 1000 m².m-3 and since it is suitable for automated fabrication. However, due to the low evaporating pressure (around 1 kPa for sorption chillers using water as refrigerant), problems such as the difficulty to wet the whole heat transfer area, failure of evaporation of the refrigerant and excessive pressure drops may occur. Thus, currently, two main different technologies are studied to optimize the size and cost of subatmospheric evaporators: plate heat exchangers (used as falling film evaporators or used as bubbles evaporators) [1-3] and capillary assisted evaporators [4-6]. In both technologies, the low operating pressure results on a nonconventional behavior of these ones.
