Pressure drop in forced flow He II at high Reynolds numbers.

Summary

A forced flow experiment is carried out using a bellows pump to push the superfluid helium through an experimental loop containing a 10 mm ID smooth straight test section. Pressure drop has been measured for velocities up to 18 m/s and bath temperature of 1.7, 1.85 and 2 K. The friction factors measured are compared with results from previous experiments and classical fluid correlations. Measurements of absolute pressure at the end of the experiment indicate the presence of cavitation at medium velocities, which move to the diffuser at higher velocities.
