Summary

The visualization experiments of superfluid helium (He II) film boiling were carried out with the transparent two-dimensional narrow channel of several gap thicknesses. The gap thickness was varied from 0.155 to 3 mm. Film boiling in open space is also investigated for comparison. In this study, the behaviour of vapour layer during boiling was investigated using the shadowgraph method in the range from atmospheric down to saturated vapour pressure. It is found that the boundaries of film boiling modes change depending on the gap thickness. In the initial phase of boiling, the interface of lambda transition, that is the He II-He I interface, was clearly observed in the cases of the gap thicknesses of 0.155 and 0.6 mm.
