Summary

LPG recovery from refinery offgas streams can be carried out using cryogenic systems driven mainly by existing gas streams operating through turboexpanders. This energy is normally wasted by letting down through a control valve into the refinery fuel header. The author details four examples, one where additional LPG recovery is achieved from a single refinery unit, one in which this can be adapted to all offgas streams to reduce excess gas flaring, another showing how a cryogenic unit can be used to separate offgases into their various constituents, primarily butane and propane, and finally where cryogenic recovery is applied to catalytic dehydrogenation of LPG paraffins. Such cryogenic systems can be added to existing plants in packaged form requiring short installation times. D.W.H.
