Prolongation of the vase life of cut carnation flowers by treatment with a combination of cis-propenylphosphonic acid and alpha-aminoisobutyric acid.

Summary

The effect of cis-propenylphosphonic acid (PPOH) and alpha-aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) on the vase life of cut carnation cv. Coral flowers was investigated. Vase life increased markedly with PPOH + AIB (up to 12.2 days with continuous treatment) compared with treatment with each compound alone (7.6 and 5 days, respectively), and their equimolar combination exerted the highest activity. When applied as a pulse treatment, the 20 mM equimolar combination was comparable with 0.2 mM silver thiosulfate, which is used commercially to prolong vase life.
