Summary

THE COMPRESSIBILITY OF LIQUID ARGON IN A CYLINDRICAL COPPER CASING UNDER PRESSURES UP TO 60 GPASCALS IS INVESTIGATED EXPERIMENTALLY. COMPRESSION OF THE CASING IS MEASURED BY THE GAMMAGRAPHIC TECHNIQUE AND THE PRESSURE IS DETERMINED BY GAS DYNAMIC CALCULATIONS. GOOD AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND THE CALCULATIONS IS OBSERVED. NO ANOMALIES CONNECTED WITH THE TRANSITION TO THE METALLIC STATE IS OBSERVED ON INVESTIGATION OF THE COMPRESSION OF ARGON TO A DENSITY OF 4,200 KG/M3. SATISFACTORY ISENTROPICITY OF THE COMPRESSION PROCESS FOLLOWS FROM A COMPARISON WITH THE SHOCK ADIABATES.
