Summary
A piston pump for liquid cryogens has been developed at the ILK Dresden. The prospect of this development is an operating temperature range between 4.2 K (liquid helium) and 112 K (liquid natural gas). The pump shall deliver 360 litres of liquid cryogen per hour against a back-pressure of up to 1.5 MPa. The basic idea behind the concept is the substitution of mechanic or pneumatic means for the driving energy transfer from the environment to the low-temperature part by a cryogenic electro-dynamic linear-motor direct drive, i.e., the pump is fully immersed in the liquid cryogen. The linear motor is a special type of iron-free near-field motor. So eddy-current and re-magnetization losses can be avoided by its operating principle. Calculations have shown that especially in the temperature range below 20 K (liquid hydrogen) a very high coefficient of performance of more than 99% can be achieved. The concept of the pump is such that the design can be easily adapted for higher volume flows and higher pressure heads. Also, very small flow rates and therefore very compact sizes are possible. The paper presents the current status of the development until the test realization and first results.
