Summary

Late 1994, members of African research organizations and French research laboratories met under the auspices of this network. All participants were specialists in the field of energy. The network has achieved concrete results in terms of the economic description of channels and five countries (Burkina Faso, Senegal, Mali, Cameroon and Chad) have completed their work. The network has conducted a census of existing air-condioning plant, fans and annual increases in sales: % of homes equipped with air conditioners: Senegal 2%, Burkina Faso 2%, Cameroon 2%, Chad and Mali less than 1%; % of homes equipped with fans: Cameroon 16%; % of homes equipped with refrigerators: Cameroon 10%. In African countries, refrigeration is responsible for a large amount of energy consumption. Cameroon researchers consider that refrigeration consumed 343 gigawatthours in 1995; this can be compared with a total of 2300 gigawatthours supplied by Sonel in 1991 (15%). The figures provided by the Senegalese researchers indicate that in 1991 refrigeration consumed 98 gigawatthours out of a total sales figure of 736 gigawatthours, this representing 15% also. Air coolers go under different names, depending on those designing them. The term "cooling ventilation" used by designers in Burkina Faso is the most explicit. The aim of studies performed by REC was to bring together the necessary technical and economic elements in order to determine their value and feasibility in terms of production. Nine working sheets have been prepared.
