Summary

Major challenges for the future revolve round global warming. Increasing focus is expected on plant efficiency and lower energy refrigerants. Though CFC replacement has concentrated in lowering ozone depletion, more research will follow seeking more efficient refrigerants. The reduction in electricity consumption and therefore carbon dioxide from power plants is USA government policy. Economic planning is now worldwide. Building retrofitting is a major issue. Also improving the working environment is seen as a way to higher productivity. This involves lighting and acoustics as well as humidity and temperature. Vapour compression systems are seen as the norm though alternatives such as absorption and the Stirling cycle may develop further. Cooperation between societies worldwide will develop in the hope of producing international standards. Both ASHRAE and ARI are using computer services. The ARI directory is now available on diskettes. Educational projects include professional seminars, guidelines, courses, home learning and technician certification. D.W.H.
