Recent developments in refrigerated ships' cargo hold insulation systems.

Author(s) : ROBERTS V.

Summary

The author looks at two alternative systems of cargo insulation which may be considered as a replacement for the traditional method of sheet panels over mineral wool fiber. All factors that affect the cost benefits of both types are discussed, and technical details of the two systems are given. One system consists of replacing the sheet material covering with interlocking, extruded aluminium panels. The other is a modular system comprising rigid panels of polyurethane foam faced with an appropriate steel covering. The suitability of both systems for use in controlled atmosphere applications is briefly discussed.
