Summary

This article is the Spanish translation of an article presented at the 22nd IIR international Congress in Beijing, China (see the Bulletin of the IIR, reference 2007-2178). The provision and operation of cold stores is energy intensive and the cost of energy is a large proportion of the turnover of any cold store. Recently, the cost of energy has increased, substantially raising operational costs. There is also an ever increasing awareness of the environmental damage caused by the combustion of fossil fuels and desire to reduce energy consumption. Therefore, good business and environmental responsibility are united in the aim of reducing energy. This paper presents information from chilled and frozen cold stores and reports data on energy usage and procedures for detecting, and helping diagnose, wasteful use of energy. Survey data on cold store usage, temperatures and refrigeration system performance are used to identify the heat loads on the cold storage rooms and to highlight areas where energy could be saved over both short and long term timescales.
