Summary
Refrigerated goods can be carried in refrigerated (reefer) containers, of which there were about 630,000 TEU (twenty foot equivalent unit) worldwide in 1996. This figure breaks down into 565,000 TEU integrated refrigerating units with their own freezers and 65,000 TEU porthole containers without refrigerating units of their own which have to be connected to cooling rods. In 1996, the international merchant fleet numbered about 1,950 full container ships larger than 100 TEU.
