Refrigerant recovery and recycling: challenges for developing countries.

Summary

Refrigerant conservation through recovery and recycling (R&R) is one way of reducing emissions and encouraging timely phase out of CFCs in developing countries. In India, there is still a large population of CFC based appliances in the field, whose lives are much beyond 2010. As CFC production is phased out in India, the demand for CFC is expected to go beyond 2010 for servicing of the CFC based units. R&R can reduce the gap between the demand and the supply to some extent. Currently R&R is not practiced in India except in mobile air conditioning. The high cost of a quality R&R unit, is beyond the financial reach of service technicians. It is possible to make indigenous R&R systems at a relatively low cost. There is a need to establish some guidelines for R&R and establishment support test centre. The paper attempts to study the issues related to R&R for various sub-sectors of refrigeration and air conditioning in developing countries. India is used as a model for the study.
