Summary

Developed nations have a relatively stable refrigeration industry, which is not the case in the developing world where there is high growth. Many people in sub-Saharan Africa have limited access to refrigeration, partly due to a lack of reliable access to an electrical grid. As developing countries are more likely to be in hot regions of the globe, air conditioning is likely in the future to take a greater share of emissions compared to developed nations. This paper has mapped the emissions of a developing nation (Rwanda) and compared it to a developed nation (UK).
The UK is estimated to have 45 times the per capita emissions of Rwanda, with most of its refrigeration and air conditioning energy related emissions, 83%, from air conditioning, compared to only 19% in the UK. The overall conclusions are likely to be applicable for similar developing and developed nations.
