Reliability improvement of safety instrumented loop with the introduction of a fault detection tool.
Number: 89
Author(s) : CHABBI A.
Summary
Safety Integrity Level (SIL) verification is a critical step in the life cycle of safety instrumented systems. It establishes the relationship between the criticality of the safety loop function and its reliability. Within the chemical process industry, SIL verification often involves calculating the Average Probability of Failure on Demand (PFDavg).
Given the criticality of these safety systems, the implementation of an online fault detection system can significantly enhance s reliability. Markov analysis provides a flexible approach for modelling system behaviour and calculating the probability of failure on demand. This paper presents a case study on a pressure loop (1oo1) system, comparing results with and without the introduction of an online fault detection tool. The findings demonstrate a measurable
improvement in system reliability following the integration of the Fault Tolerant Control system.
