REPLACEMENTS FOR CFC REFRIGERANTS.

Type of article: Article
Summary
A RANGE OF REFRIGERANTS EITHER IS ALREADY AVAILABLE, OR WILL BE AVAILABLE WITHIN 5 YEARS, TO MEET ALL OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE REFRIGERATION INDUSTRY. UNFORTUNATELY, IT IS NOT POSSIBLE WITH THE TECHNOLOGY NOW AVAILABLE TO CONSIDER THE EARLY PHASE-OUT OF ALL REFRIGERANTS WITH ANY POTENTIEL TO DEPLETE THE OZONE LAYER. IT IS NOT BELIEVED THAT SUCH A CHANGE (THE END OF THE HCFCS) CAN TAKE PLACE BEFORE ABOUT 2030 TO2050. PROVIDED THAT THE USE OF LESS-THAN-PERFECT REFRIGERANTS IS ACCEPTED, THERE IS NO REASON TO QUESTION THE PRACTICABILITY OF A TOTAL PHASE-OUT OF THE FULLY HALOGENATED CFCS BY THE END OF THIS CENTURY.
