RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT FOCUS ON COMMERCIAL NATURAL GAS COOLING/AIR CONDITIONING.
Author(s) : DOLAN W. H.
Type of article: Article
Summary
GAS IS OFTEN AN ATTRACTIVE ALTERNATIVE FUEL TO ELECTRICAL ENERGY. THE AUTHOR OUTLINES A NUMBER OF WAYS IN WHICH GAS MAY BE USED TO POWER AIR-CONDITIONING SYSTEMS BOTH NOW AND IN THE FUTURE. THE DEVELOPMENT OF ADAPTED AUTOMOTIVE ENGINES TO GAS AS A FUEL PROVIDES AN ALTERNATIVE TO ELECTRIC MOTOR DRIVE FOR CHILLERS, WITH THE ADVANTAGES OF WASTE HEAT AVAILABILITY AND SPEED CONTROL. CHILLERS USING BOTHRECIPROCATING AND SCREW COMPRESSORS ARE UNDER DEVELOPMENT. GAS REGENERATED DESICCANT SYSTEMS CAN BE USED IN SEVERAL WAYS TO REDUCE REFRIGERATION LOADS OR COMBINED WITH DIRECT EXPANSION COOLING. FURTHER RESEARCH IS BEING APPLIED TO RANKINE CYCLES, ALSO EJECTOR SYSTEMS. D.W.H.
