Summary

The starting mode of a small low temperature refrigerating machine is in focus of the experimental investigation reported in the paper. The refrigerating machine operates by the Linde cycle with a conventional single-stage hermetic lubricated compressor. A three-component non-azeotropic mixture of hydrocarbons - isobutene/ethane/methane - is used as a refrigerant. The starting modes were studied under heavy duty heat load on the system resulting from the initial (pre-starting) thermal equilibrium between the whole system and ambience. In addition to the general heat exchangers, the system is completed with an internal recuperative heat exchanger (RHEX) of high efficiency. The object of cooling is a small testing chamber to be cooled down and thermostabilized at a temperature level of -70 to -80°C. The experimental data demonstrate a crucial effect of the RHEX cooling process and the low-boiling mixture components condensation in the refrigerant high-pressure flow in the RHEX on the machine starting performance. Excessive values of the discharge pressure, compression ratio and compressor input power have been observed during the start up process which may last for tens of minutes. Some of those values, specifically the discharge pressure and pressure ratio, could be twice as large as under the stationary mode affecting the refrigerating machine reliability. Some probable causes of the phenomena and countermeasures are pointed out.
