Summary

THE AUTHORS REPORT AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE BEST METALS AND DESIGN TO USE FOR PELTIER-EFFECT COOLING OF STANDARD METAL-CUTTING TOOLS. TESTS RESULTED IN THE CHOICE OF IRON-CONSTANTAN JUNCTIONS. THE IRON IS IN THE FORM OF AN INNER SQUARE RING OF A SIZE SUITABLE FOR ENCASING THE TOOL, AND AN OUTER HEAT DISSIPATING SQUARE RING, THE TWO BEING JOINED BY CONSTANTAN SPACERS WHICH PROVIDE STRUCTURAL, THERMAL AND ELECTRICAL PATHS. A NUMBER OF SUCH ASSEMBLIES ARE USED IN PARALLEL TO FORM A SLEEVE ROUND THE TOOL-HOLDER. D.W.H.
